Mark Bodnarczuk is the Executive Director of the Breckenridge Institute®. He is also on staff in
the Director’s Office of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, and was
formerly in the Director’s Office at Fermilab from 1985 through 1992 and the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory from 1992 until 1996 when he founded the Breckenridge Institute,
a management consulting firm that focuses on organizational transformation and culture change.
While at the University of Chicago, his research focused on the history, culture, and social
structure of large high-energy physics collaborations at Fermilab, with publications that include,
Some Sociological Consequences of High-Energy Physicists’ Development of the Standard Model
and Mega Science in Particle Physics: The Birth of an Experiment String at Fermilab.


He has over thirty years of experience working in the areas of high-tech, basic and applied
research, pharmaceuticals, commercial construction, government, and non-profit organizations.
He also has extensive experience working in the Department of Energy National Laboratories and
the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nuclear weapons complex in the areas of
organization development and organizational culture. His professional work and research focus
on understanding the processes by which organizational culture: a) is formed, b) operates, and c)
is transformed. He uses state-of-the-art assessment tools in combination with traditional methods
of organization development, advanced analytics, qualitative analysis from cultural anthropology,
and personality type to study organizational culture.


He has published widely in the areas of organization development and leadership development
and is the author of four books including, Making Invisible Bureaucracy Visible: A Guide to
Assessing and Changing Organizational Culture, Diving In: Discovering Who You Are in the
Second Half of Life, and his latest book, Island of Excellence: 3 Powerful Strategies for Building
a Culture of Creativity
. He has also published widely in the areas of organizational
transformation, cultural analysis, and deep personal change.


Mark has a BA from Mid-America Nazarene University, an MA from Wheaton College, and an
AM from the University of Chicago. He has also done Executive and Continuing Professional
Education studies in leadership at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University.
